Free-roaming wild mustangs visit the campground and lakeshore regularly
Washoe Lake State Park
✓ Sites AvailableWild horses, bald eagles, and mountain views — midway between Reno and Carson City
Washoe Lake State Park sits in a sweeping high-desert valley framed by the Sierra Nevada, Carson Range, and Virginia Mountains. The 49-site campground offers two distinct loops: Loop A with water and electric hookups (up to 45ft RVs), Loop B for dry camping with generous site spacing. Wild mustangs roam the park freely — campers regularly wake to horses grazing at the lake edge. Bald eagles, white pelicans, osprey, and mule deer are year-round residents. Thirty minutes from Reno, thirty from Carson City — close enough for resupply runs, remote enough to feel like you're genuinely out.

Known Issues
Showers are push-button timed and low-pressure — functional but not great. Lake water quality can be an issue in drought years (algae blooms) — check before swimming or paddling. Horse manure on trails is a common complaint. Loop B has limited shade.
